Brisbane-based independent music label Green Chimneys Records (GCR) is proud to announce the release of the first instalment in a new series of limited edition cassettes, featuring local producers Sam Stosuur and Rohan the Intern.
GCR’s Lo-fi Tape Series is the label’s first venture into cataloguing the creative depths of Brisbane’s underground electronic music scene, tied together in a packaging reminiscent of much-loved VHS tapes of yore. Releases in the series will feature two artists per cassette, with each given one side to showcase their individual talents.
Episode 1 features resident Green Chimneys producer/DJ’s, Rohan the Intern and Sam Stosuur, exploring the sounds of modern downtempo electronica and lo-fi hip-hop, and featuring collaborations with vocalists Tr38cho (USA), Laneous and Roman MC.
Local keyboardist/producer Rohan Seekers’ solo project, Rohan the Intern, made a quiet but assertive debut on WYWS at the end of 2017 with “Blue”, a 40-odd minute collection of dusty sample loops, drawing heavily from soul music and Brazilian sounds. The response to “Blue” and it’s subsequent cassette release has seen Rohan featured on 4ZZZ Radio’s live-to-air performance program Right Here, Right Now and Melbourne-based web series Ride With It, live performances in Melbourne and Brisbane, and an inaugural festival slot at Strawberry Fields. Rohan’s contribution to GCR’s Lo-fi Tape Series, “Bent Fenders”, provides a snapshot of initial experiments incorporating vocals and live instrumentation into his production, spreading the net of sonic possibilities wider to include the keyboard and composition skills honed on numerous Brisbane stages, and to showcase key collaborators from the local hip-hop and soul music scenes.
Sam Stosuur is a Brisbane based Producer/Musician/DJ focused on challenging the creative norms of working in Australia. After years of collaborating on various Brisbane recording projects, Sam finally released his debut solo EP “Dunlop Molley” via Beats of No Nation in August 2018. Following this vibrant release, Sam Stosuur pushes further towards the beautiful realm of jazzy, hiphop infused house with his latest release on pocketmoth, Seeds EP.
The inaugural release in GCR’s Lo-fi Tape Series, featuring both Rohan the Intern’s “Bent Fenders” and Sam Stosuur’s “Tennis Elbow” EPs, will be launched with a free-entry event at Barbara in Fortitude Valley on April 26th. The night will feature live sets from both releasing artists, with support from local future-funk producer B a k m a h n (Business Casual) and selections from Brisbane beat scene mainstay, el delpha.
