From humble beginnings in Brisbane’s West End, 7-piece live hip-hop act Astro Travellers have combined an eclectic mix of hip-hop, jazz and psychedelic styles into a sound all their own. Fast-paced rhymes courtesy of emcees Rui Da Cruz and ALI the GREAT, future soul flavour from vocalist Tiana Khasi, and cosmic beats delivered by one of Brisbane’s finest rhythm sections – The Ultrafantastics.
Astro Travellers independently released their debut single on 7″ vinyl in November 2014, and in 2015 embarked on their first tour of Australia’s East Coast supporting the release of their debut EP “Seven Metaphors”. The EP marks Astro Travellers’ opening statement as a band. Combining off-the-cuff studio freestyles with compositions that have been lovingly crafted both in the rehearsal room and onstage. For the first time, the combination of live instrumentation, rap and voice blends together seamlessly on record. The first single taken from the EP, “Future Supernova” was added to
Double J’s playlist in August 2015.
“I don’t know what’s more impressive here, the unrelenting, perfectly delivered rhymes, or the way the band lays back with a smooth, classy jam and never tries to push to the front. Brilliant stuff all round”. ★★★★1/2 -Dan Condon, Double J Music Editor
Notable achievements from the band’s career so far include: Supporting Guilty Simpson and DJ Katalyst on the Brisbane leg of their 2014 Australian Tour. Performing at the 2016 Queensland Music Awards and taking home the award for the best song (Move Actively) in the Urban category on the same night. Astro Travellers were also one of four nominees for the overall song of the year at the QMAs.
Astro Travellers have also performed at numerous festivals including Jungle Love (2014/2015), The Big Chill, Sausage & Breadlam (Bedlam Records’ Australia Day Party) and have most recently been added to the lineup for the 2016 edition of The Gum Ball Festival.
